Around the farm
Fish Rock Farms is much more than cannabis. So many wonderful plants, trees, animals, and insects have made a home on the farm also. Our part of the Mendocino coast range that includes Gualala is considered Zone 9a and 9b on the plant hardiness map. We are prone to the occasional coastal fog but still enjoy many warm sunny days.
The farm had blackberries when our family began homesteading in 1980. Red and golden raspberries were planted first followed by kiwi, three varieties of apple (red delicious, gravenstein, and pippin), Santa Rosa plums, Asian pears, and lemons. Garlic and onions are a yearly staple for us also. Other vegetables including tomatoes, peppers, corn, beans, peas, lettuce, chard, kale and herbs including cilantro and basil have been rotated into our beds.
In the sunniest places on the farm, wildflowers are left to ramble and return among our planted Japanese maples, sunflowers, roses, and tower of jewels. In the dappled light nearer to our stands of douglas fir, redwoods, and tan oak trees live pink and cream datura alongside vibrant red and purple fuchsia. All of the flowers nurture a wide variety of butterflies and birds. Living on porches and decks in containers we have a collection of succulents and a few geraniums along with the occasional cannabis plant that could not find a home in the garden.
